Kakdwip, May 25: A severe cyclonic storm, accompanied by torrential rainfall, battered the coastal areas of South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur yesterday midnight.

Sweeping ashore at a wind speed of 115 kmph, the cyclone uprooted hundreds of trees and electric poles, disrupting power supply and communication across thirty-five villages. High tidal waves breached river embankments, flooding vast farmlands with saline water. Over five thousand mud houses collapsed, leaving thousands of villagers homeless.

NDRF teams and the district administration have launched war-footing rescue operations. Affected villagers have been shifted to flood shelters where dry food, drinking water, tarpaulins, and medicines are being distributed.
