Editorial Letter: Reckless Driving and Road Accidents | Class 9

Through the esteemed columns of your highly esteemed daily, I venture to voice grave public distress and acute indignation regarding the alarming escalation of reckless driving and tragic road mishaps that have turned our city streets into deadly accident corridors.

Hardly a single day passes without reports of heart-wrenching accidents claiming precious innocent lives. The primary perpetrators behind this carnage are private bus drivers engaging in reckless cutthroat competition to pick up passengers first, and rash young motorcyclists performing perilous stunts without helmets. In total defiance of speed regulations, heavy transport lorries roar through busy pedestrian intersections at breakneck speed. Moreover, rampant violation of red traffic signals, brazen drunk driving at night, and speaking on cellular phones while maneuvering steering wheels have become customary practices. Pedestrians attempting to cross through zebra crossings live under perpetual dread of being knocked down.

Although campaigns like 'Safe Drive, Save Life' are in operation, stricter punitive enforcement is imperative. The traffic police must deploy sophisticated speed-radar guns, cancel licenses of chronic traffic offenders, impose hefty fines, and conduct rigorous breathalyzer tests. Street lights and CCTV surveillance must be augmented immediately. I earnestly request the transport department to take decisive action before more innocent lives are mercilessly snuffed out.
